Rob Recalls ‘Most Stupid Thing’ He Did For ‘Remember Me’

Happy “Remember Me” day, everybody! But before you head to the theater to see Robert Pattinson in his first post-Edward Cullen solo project, be sure to read on for part two of our MTV Radio’s interview with him for RPattz’s thoughts on the film, the scenes that he found hardest to shoot and the dumbest thing he ever did.

MTV: Your character Tyler has some issues with anger, being tormented and especially his parents. Do you have any kind of new insight into why teenagers rebel like this?

Robert Pattinson: I knew a lot of teens who were troubled, and then you meet their families and you’re like, “I don’t know what his problem is.” The families always seem really nice and supportive, and it’s just this unknown. You have this energy, and you don’t know where to place it. I think the reason why [Tyler] has a problem with his father and not his mother is that he knows his mother isn’t strong enough to take it. If he started attacking her, she’d just break. His father is still a fighter, so he’s always going to fight against him.

MTV: The movie seems very realistic in its depiction of NYU students — how much did shooting in New York with real locations help?

Pattinson: I always thought about the apartment. If this is just a typical NYU student’s apartment — living in the East Village in this really nice apartment — I always thought that was a bit much. It’s like a million-dollar apartment! It did help. Annoyingly, I couldn’t spend as much time as I thought I could [researching the role].

MTV: Why not?

Pattinson: Before I went to New York, I thought it’d be really easy; I could hang out there and pick up on a lot of New Yorkers’ mannerisms and things. But it ended up being more of a circus than I thought it was going to be.

MTV: Was it harder getting into character with all the craziness surrounding you during the shoot?

Pattinson: Kind of. At the beginning it was. But then, halfway through, I had an epiphany, and then I was fine. It’s just a matter of learning how to block things out. At the beginning, it was just driving me insane. Especially with a character that’s lost and supposed to be looking for [answers] all the time — and you can’t look up, because then all the [paparazzi] shutters accelerate. You can’t smile, you can’t behave normally. You just have to be more disciplined about it.

MTV: Do you think your “Little Ashes” performance as Salvador Dalí was harmed a bit because people couldn’t look at you and not think Edward Cullen?

Pattinson: I think it was. I mean, I shot it before “Twilight,” but I think people do judge things differently after the “Twilight”s. But there’s nothing you can really do about that. I do take it into account more now than I used to. But during the Dalí thing, when I was doing it, I didn’t think anyone was ever going to see it! It’s a very different place to be at when you think you’re making a movie which no one is ever going to see. I mean, you’re not afraid to experiment with things.

MTV: So knowing that you were famous and people would see “Remember Me,” do you feel like you were able to give the film your all?

Pattinson: I don’t know. I don’t really know what my all is. I think I always felt very connected to it, right from the beginning when I read the script.

MTV: A lot of the anger in the film comes from your relationship with your dad, played by Pierce Brosnan. In real life, do you have a good relationship with your father?

Pattinson: My relationship with my dad is the opposite. The part was written as much more controlling, arrogant — and Pierce seems like a nice guy, so he just read the character as not a horrible man; he’s not a monster. It completely changes the relationship Tyler has with him. You’re looking at a [father] who you know the audience is going to be thinking, “He’s all right,” which I thought was quite interesting. It’s this guy’s rebellion against nothing. You’re just attacking someone because you know they can be attacked, and he’s going to keep standing afterwards. Pierce was great.

MTV: Did you enjoy the fight scenes? Is it very different than acting with words?

Pattinson: Yes, I loved it. It’s completely different. I never do stuff like that, so it was quite cathartic.

MTV: Was it daunting doing those scenes with Oscar winner Chris Cooper?

Pattinson: Yeah. I don’t know how I’d feel if I had any fighting back to do. I just continually get beaten up by him. [Laughs.] It’s hard, especially being strangled. It’s difficult to look like what’s actually happening. You’re doing it [for the camera] as well, so it’s like you’re being strangled but nothing really happens. You’re just standing there, experimenting with myself. I don’t really know what the face is like for someone getting strangled.

MTV: Were you hurt in that particular scene? Because it’s very convincing.

Pattinson: No, not at all. But I did hurt myself in a scene they cut out, where I flipped out. [In the scene] I walked into a big confrontation and ended up getting completely destroyed by your competitor. I was doing this thing, hitting myself afterwards in a spur-of-the-moment thing, which they cut out of the movie. But I kept hitting myself so hard. I was in so much pain for the rest of the shoot. It was the most stupid thing I’ve ever done.

I thought Rob did an amazing job with the character of Tyler, and Ruby with the character of Caroline. I was most taken by Tylers love for Caroline. Not too many brothers his age out there that are willing to be their little sisters best friend. I think I enjoyed the Tyler/Caroline relationship more than the Tyler/Ally relationship. However I did NOT LIKE the ending at all. I thought that it was an awful way to end it. It didn’t have to be the typical hollywood happy ending that everyone usually expects, but I thought it just ruined the whole journey that you went on with him, Ally and Caroline. I mean how much tragedy can you really expect an 11yr. old little girl to be able to endure? No friends, older brother hanging himself, a practically non-existant relationship with your father and then the one and only person in your life who you know will always be there for you unconditionally, the one who is basically devoted to you, is ripped away from you. I just thought the ending could have been written much differently and still made a point on the struggles they were going thru. I think if I can bring myself to go see it again I will have to walk out before the ending.

@Patty, I have though the same way as you do. If I could only change the ending I would do so. But as they say, “Truth is stranger than fiction” and the movie is properly titled, “Remember Me”.

I went to see it for the second time, ( today with my daughter) but then the theater had a POWER OUTAGE, Robfans were mad cuz they were not able to see the ending. It happened on a stormy day in NYC. Unbelievable.

Hi there,

I have to admit I didn’t want to watch Twilight, “pff another teen (so commercial) movie with a cute guy who won’t be able to have a proper career because of this”teen” image that will stick on him”…I thought….
But to make my pupils happy (I’m an English teacher in France), I had to watch Twilight to prepare some lessons….(good excuse, isn’t it?) ….and I was really impressed by the plot, the dialogues and of course by the leading actor ;-) waow I was like a teen again…..my heart was beating, even tried to get my lips closer when he kissed kristen, lol !!
So then, I’ve looked for his age on your website…..he is 3 years younger than me!! , poor Clare….already a coughar at 26 ;-) ….
Hope he’ll get some other interesting projects to lead a non-commercial and mature career- that he deserves….

Clare

Patty….I saw RM today and i have to say that while the ending was tragic, it was so real. That is what the movie was about- live life to the fullest because you never know what tomorrow brings. Tyler was very troubled but was fortunate to realize at the end that his father really did love him. Rob did a beautiful job with this character and it’s refreshing that an actor makes me want to go to the THEATER and see his movies instead of waiting for the dvd….even in the worst of weather! i look forward to watching RP mature and expand his roles. So proud of you Rob!!!

RM is a great movie, deeply moved story though with a sad ending. Rob Paterson is surprisingly amazing. I am not a fan of him prior to RM for i thought he is famous by his looking rather than by his acting. Now i am glad that i am wrong.

Just saw the movie and loved it, every emotion is in this movie and the ending I could never of guessed it even though I tried. This is a movie that I will always remember and talk about to my family and friends now and in years to come. great work everyone envolved :)

It sounds so amazing can’t wait to see it roll on april.

Comment by Rebekah — March 14, 2010 @ 2:21 pm

Saw RM for the second time yesterday (Fan Day) and loved it just as much the second time around. It was fun to listen to everyone’s reactions. There was crying in the theater at the end. Talk in the restroom was that it was too sad. Some were just “fried” because a certain someone died. As tragic as the events were, the journey of the characters was a pleasure to share, and I felt that in spite of the final tragedy, the script ended on an “up” note as Tyler’s life really did touch all of the people most involved in his life, even in his anger and rebellion. Just as the father was a “prick, but useful”, Tyler’s grief, angst, rebellion and love all provided healing. A great film!

I have a feeling that this movie will do better Internationally than in the U.S. North American market. I saw the movie and thought it was excellent and that Rob did a superb job of acting. No one has mentioned that IMO he deserves kudos for taking on a very bold script that he probably knew would be controversial. However, the ending was handled very tastefully and IMO the movie imparts a beautiful tribute to the events of that time and reminds us that behind the numbers in a tradgedy like this, their are individual stories to be told.BTW Scummit did this movie no favours in So many ways. The ending was leaked all over the net before the opening. The Eclipse trailer was put out by Summit the day before the opening. They should never have rated it for a PG and even tried to draw in the die hard Twihards on this movie. If you try to cater to everyone’s taste you end up pleasing no one. I feel really devastated that the movie didn’t do better opening week-end, but I think it may pick up steam as it goes along.

Comment by Myra — March 16, 2010 @ 12:20 am

I’m with Dawn, Rebekah, San Patty and al the people who said that Rob was amazing, superb. I know he will be more than amazing in his future movies. I saw RM 5 times 2 in the opening day Friday 2 Saturday & 1 yesterday and I loved it, and like Dawn I felt really devastated that the movie didn’t do better the opening week-end. Somebody said there are more Edward’s fan than Rob’s fans that sad because Edward Cullen don’t exist, and Rob is a wonderful human being, if all his fans were been in the opening of RM. it be very different and I know Rob would be very very happy seen his fans support, but well hope this movie pick up steam as it goes along. Rob can count with my support always I will get NM, I’ll go to the theater to see Eclipse and I will waiting for Bel Ami and all of his movies I will buy them. I already have all of his past movies and the Robssesed video. Love U Rob.

rob is in london for rm premiere, about twilight , I think a lot of people dont understand what edward was going thru when he sees bella, people need to read midnight sun, its in stephanies web site, rob did a great job, he is a great actor, twiilight is from bellas point of view, but midnight sun is from edwards point of view, rob read both, so his performance is perfect, I saw him in remember me, he nailed that one too. I think kristen did a good job, I love taylor but he is too short, he is a little gentleman and has poise. rob needs more self esteem, hey rob you are the best, your music is fantastic, guitar, piano, what other talents this kid have, keep on making good movies and good music, and are u really in love with kristen ? fans need to know, good luck, good wishes for you and kristen in both your careers, may god bless you both,

The level cap in the next Aion Kinah will be slightly lower than expected this time around 85.
This suggests Aion Gold wants more Aion account for expansions before hitting the Aion Accounts. With less Sell aion accounts to do (along with the revamped leveling listed below likely to increase the Aion gold and ease of Aion Kinah), leveling a new race remains appealing for new and existing players alike.
Leveling from 80-85 should be a much bigger Aion Gold, the idea is to make sure that gaining a level really means cheapest wow gold and doesn’t make you feel like you just have 4 more Aion Kinah to go.

I was following something else about this on an alternative website. Interesting. Your linear opinion on it is diametrically opposed with what I read in the very first place. I am still wondering over the contrary points of view, but I’m leaning to a great extent towards yours. And regardless, that’s what is so incredible about modern day democracy and the market place of opinions on-line.
